Morosov’s mansion

A. Morosov’s mansion

Public symphony concerts, where P.I. Tchaikovsky performed often, took place in the building since 1890 on initiative of V. I. Safonov, the head of Moscow conservatory hall. A circus burnt away in 1892 because of gas-light casual handling. An owner V.A. Morozova of the house that stood nearby bought the land. Having built a small mansion she presented it to her 24-year old son Arseny. The architecture of the building is distinguished by combination of various styles: Spanish and Moresque; classical European and Russian. With such a combination the owner wanted to memorize the countries she had visited. Interior has been preserved very well (the style of the late 19th century), including marble floor, golden fretwork, German mosaic and wall paintings in “Pompeian fresco” style. The house was given to the Friendship with foreign people Community in the Soviet times. Nowadays, meetings and conferences with foreign delegations, exhibitions of foreign artists take place in the building.
